Double Bay Sanctuary staff were honoured to assist the local Whale Interpretive Center and local community members by helping flense two marine mammals this year. A Bryde’s whale and a Steller sea lion are being prepared for display, so their stories can live on through education and research. This work will support the new Whale Interpretive Center being built following a devastating fire. On September 4, because of Double Bay Sanctuary’s location in the Broughton Archipelago, we were able to respond on behalf of DFO to help locate and provide positioning for an entangled humpback whale, Tutu. Accurate, real-time positioning can make a critical difference in coordinating rescue response and reducing harm. On July 10, Pacific Divers Scuba Club and Pacific Pro Dive volunteered their time and expertise to assess future debris cleanup locations in the bay. On August  30, staff and volunteers coordinated a shoreline cleanup in Double Bay, responding to plastic pollution accumulating along Hanson Island. Together, we removed 1,100  lbs of polystyrene, much  of it washed into the forest well above  the high tide line. This effort reflects what community-powered restoration looks like. In August  2024, Double Bay Sanctuary team members began water, sediment, and soil testing to establish a meaningful baseline for long-term stewardship. The analysis indicates environmental quality within acceptable parameters, with very low levels of contaminants.
